| Tuesday, May 13 | | The Caldwell Humane Society is taking appointments for upcoming low-cost spay/neuter clinics. Appointments are open to the general public and may be made in person at the downstairs meeting rooms of the main branch of the Caldwell County Library in Lenoir Tuesday, May 13 from 6-8 p.m. Applications can be picked up in advance at any branch of the Caldwell County Library or at Caldwell Animal Care and Control. Bring your pet's current rabies certificate if it has one. Applicants who would like to apply for financial aid should bring documents showing their monthly income. | Wednesday, May 14 | | During May, any AARP member along with a friend or relative can take the eight-hour Driver Safety Program classroom course for the normal tuition fee of $10, and both will receive a certificate of completion. People do not have to be a member of AARP to take the course, but only members receive the 50 percent reduction. A class is scheduled for May 14-15 at Dudley Shoals Baptist Church in Granite Falls, and another will be May 28-29 at East Burke Senior center in Hildebran. | Thursday, May 15 | | The CMH Foundation will host its annual 100 for $100 charity raffle. The event will be at Cedar Rock Thursday, May 15 at 6 p.m. One hundred tickets will be sold at $100 each. The 1st, 25th, 50th and 75th name drawn will win $100. The last ticket drawn will win $3,000. Ticket purchasers may bring someone just to dine and have fun for $25. All proceeds benefit the William E. Stevens, Jr. Cancer Care Center, a division of Caldwell Memorial Hospital.

| Friday, May 16 | | The Caldwell County Relay for Life will be Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May 17 at West Caldwell High School. The event honors the memory of those who died of cancer as well as those who are cancer survivors. Activities begin at 6 p.m., Friday and continue through 8 a.m. Saturday. | Friday, May 16 | | The Caldwell Arts Council will host Beach Bash 2008 Friday, May 16 from 7-10 p.m. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. at Mulberry Recreation Center with the Catalinas performing. | Friday, May 16 | | Altrusa International of Caldwell County, Inc. will host its annual golf tournament Friday, May 16 at Cedar Rock Country Club. The format is a four-person captain's choice with a 1 p.m. shotgun start following lunch at 11:30 a.m. The cost is $200 per four-person team or $50 per person. The first golfer to shoot a hole-in-one on the par-3 17th hole will receive a free car. Prizes will be awarded on all par-3 holes. Door prizes will be awarded to all participants. Proceeds from the tournament will fund eight scholarships for Caldwell County students, as well as other local community service club projects. | Friday, May 16 | | The Patterson School will host an Art Expo Friday, May 16 from 6-8 p.m. at Gard Hall on the school campus. Everyone is invited to an artists' reception featuring works by students, local artists, Patterson School faculty and alumni. Admission is free. A raffle for door prizes will also take place. Any proceeds will be donated to the art program.This event will allow local students and artists the opportunity to share their work, ideas and enjoy an evening of art appreciation. | Friday, May 16 | | The Caldwell County Historical Society, the Caldwell County Genealogical Society and the Friends of the Library are uniting to present “The Truth Behind the Frankie Silver Legend,” Friday, May 16 at 7 p.m. The location is Room 6 of the Caldwell County Public Library in Lenoir. Guest speakers are Maxine McCall, author of “They Won't Hang a Woman “and performer of a one -oman show about Frankie Silver, and Perry Deane Young, author of “The Untold Story of Frankie Silver” and the play “Frankie.” The program is free to the public, and light refreshments will be served after the presentation.

| Saturday, May 17 | | The Friends of Wilson Creek will host History Day at Edgemont and Mortimer along Wilson Creek Saturday, May 17. Costumed interpreters will be at strategic points to tell about happenings in that area 75 to 100 years ago. Impersonators of persons who lived in that area will talk about the floods, the railroad, the lumber camps, the CCC camp and the social life during that time period. The tour is free of charge and will begin at the Wilson Creek Visitor Center. Participants will travel in their own vehicles to specific areas along the Creek. Minimal walking is required. Tours will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m . Groups are welcome, and attendees can pack their own lunches or buy it on site.

| Monday, May 19 | | The City of Lenoir Public Works Department will be hosting an open house for the citizens of Lenoir Monday, May 19 from 4-6 p.m. Public Works employees will be serving hotd ogs, chips, drinks and ice cream. There will be an exhibit of the city's recycling center, tours of the facilities, equipment on display, and the chance for one of our citizens to win a special door prize through a drawing that evening. | Tuesday, May 20 | | Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care will host a one-time-only program May 20 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. to help people deal with moving forward in their lives after experiencing the loss of someone close to them. The program will be facilitated by Bereavement Coordinator Tracey Carriker. It is open to anyone in the Unifour area who is grieving a loss, regardless of how long ago the death occurred. | Tuesday, May 20 | | There will be a boating safety course offered May 20 and 21 beginning at 6 p.m. and lasting until 9 p.m. This is a free course and is required for children ages 14 and 15 who wish to operate a PWC. | Thursday, May 29 | | The Children of the World Choir will present a one-hour concert Thursday, May 29 at 7 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 309 Church Street in Lenoir. The concert is free. This choir consists of 16 children between the ages of 6 and 11, all from Africa or India, all or mostly all orphaned by either the AIDS Pandemic or the ravages of war. All of the children are healthy. They will wear native costuming and sing in both their native tongues and English. They sing some traditional music and some contemporary music. They have performed at the Crystal Cathedral in California, at Disney World and Disney Land and on television. | Friday, July 4 | | The Lenoir Parks and Recreation Department will host the Firecracker 5K and 1-mile Fun Run Friday, July 4 at Mulberry Recreation Center. The event starts at 8 a.m. following registration at 6:30 p.m. Early registration for the 5K is $15 if postmarked by June 27 and $20 if after. The cost for the Fun Run is $10, and no pre-registration is required. Awards will be given for first, second and third place overall, for males females and various age groups from 14 and under to 70 and older.
