Wilsons lead South into 4-A state meet
By Justin Parker, Sports EditorSouth Caldwell enters today's 4-A track & field state championships in Greensboro led by two Wilsons. Senior Jasmine Wilson is the top seeded Spartan in the field. She qualified fifth in two events. Meanwhile, fellow senior Tara Wilson, a distance runner, enters the meet as a veteran competitor on the state level. She's competed each of her four years. Last week, Jasmine Wilson set a school record with a discus throw of 110 feet, three inches. That qualified her fifth in the state field. She's also fifth in the shot put (35-09). “She's in the ballpark,” South coach Mike McCall says. “I'm happy for her. Hopefully, she'll have a big day.” Tara Wilson, also an all-state cross country runner, is seeded ninth in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs, respectively. She qualified for the 1,600 - or mile run - in five minutes, 24.04 seconds. In the two-mile, she ran a 11:57.87. “She's one of those people that could jump up there and have a big run,” McCall says. “She's right in there.” Two other Spartans will also be competing. Junior Adrian Cooke is in her second state meet, competing in the 100 hurdles (16.41) and the 300 hurdles (49.25). “She's definitely our most-improved athlete,” McCall says. The lone male qualifier from South is senior Dustin Potter. The school's record holder for career wins in wrestling (151) qualified for the state tournament for four straight years in that sport, also a school record. In just his second year in the pole vault, he's made states. He qualified with a mark of 12 feet. “He's an outstanding all-around athlete,” says McCall. Competition at North Carolina A & T University begins at 10 a.m. with field events. Finals for track events begin at 1 p.m.
