Wilsons place at state meet

Turns out the Wilsons are as good as advertised.

Jasmine Wilson and Tara Wilson led the way for the South Caldwell track and field team Saturday at the 4-A state championships in Greensboro. Jasmine Wilson placed fourth in the discus throw (109 feet, 5 inches) and Tara Wilson placed fifth in the 1,600-meter run in school-record time (5:18.89).

“They both had good days,” South Caldwell coach Mike McCall said. “I was really pleased with that.”

Jasmine Wilson also placed 10th in the shot put (32 feet, 6 inches) while Tara Wilson took 15th in the 3,200-meter run (12:12).

The Spartans also got solid performances from Adrian Cooke in the 100 and 300 hurdles (14th and 15-place finishes, respectively) and Dustin Potter in the pole vault (13th place).

“We got good efforts from everybody,” McCall said.

The girls placed 24th as a team with nine points. Butler won the women's portion (58), while New Bern took the men's (64).

Tennis

Nelson/Nero

nab No. 1 seed

Hibriten's doubles tandem of Avery Nelson and Huntley Nero continued its romp through the individual playoffs Saturday, dispatching two more opponents en route to taking the No. 1 seed out of the 2-A.

In the semifinals, Nelson and Nero took down Newton-Conover's Hang Choi and Alex Burchins 6-1, 6-1.

In the finals, Nelson and Nero prevailed over Ledford's Landon Rogers and Scott Buchanan 6-2, 7-6 (8-6 tiebreaker).

The Hibriten pairing will play again next week at the state competition at the Cary Tennis Center. They are scheduled to take the court on Friday morning.
