One-stop voting enters final week

Voters across Caldwell County have been taking advantage of early one-stop balloting sites to make their choices in the 2008 primary election.

According to Caldwell County Board of Elections officials, more than 1,500 individuals have participated in the vote at one of the two polling stations in the county.

Early voting will continue throughout this week at the Shuford Recreation Center, located at 51 Pinewood Road, Granite Falls, and the Caldwell County Office building, located at 905 West Ave., Lenoir.

The polling stations are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday.

Non-registered voters may register and vote at the one-stop sites. This option will not be available for traditional voting Tuesday, May 6.

Voters are deciding which candidates advance to the November general election. Races of particular interest include the battle for the Democratic presidential nomination between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, along with Republican and Democratic contests to determine nominees for U.S. Congress, North Carolina Governor and U.S. Senator.

Locally, voters have eight Republican and five Democratic candidates for Caldwell County Commissioner who are vying for three spots from each party to move on to November.

Registered Republicans and Democrats must vote in their party's primary, along with the non-partisan judgeship races. Individuals who are registered as unaffiliated must declare which party ballot they want to use, otherwise, they will be given only the non-partisan ballot.

For more information on early voting, contact the Caldwell County Board of Elections at 757-1326.
